The HIV Clinical Training Program.  Individualized clinical mini-sabbatical experiences are arranged in Denver for primary care practitioners in Colorado and the Mountain-Plains region. (approved for continuing professional education credits for nurses and physicians)

  • The Clinical Training Program for Dentists. A "mini-residency" to teach dental practitioners to recognize early oral signs and symptoms of HIV infection and to manage the oral health needs of HIV-infected patients across the spectrum of HIV disease.  Offered annually the first Tue-Wed in May (approved for 10 category 1 credit hours by the Continuing Education Office of the University of Colorado School of Dentistry)
Program Development and Presentation. The Colorado AIDS ETC accepts all requests for HIV education programs for health professionals and will either design programs to meet specific educational needs or assist in identifying appropriate resources. Clinical faculty and educators travel statewide. Contact the CAETC at (303) 315-2512 or through e-mail for Lisa Lawrence with program requests.  Examples of programs that have been developed and are available upon request as follows:
  • Rural Training. A rurally-focused, case-based HIV/AIDS training program emphasizing HIV prevention, early intervention and health promotion. The curriculum can be adapted for non-rural settings. Part of an 8-state Special Project of National Significance (SPNS), this training is provided by teams of clinical professionals with extensive HIV patient care experience.  (2-4 hours)

  • E-mail clinical consultation service.   Clinicians who are treating patients with HIV infection may e-mail diagnostic or treatment questions to a  central file.
  • Comprehensive Management of HIV Infection
Presented by expert HIV clinicians, the program addresses HIV patient care, from history taking and disease staging through initiating and changing antiretroviral therapy and OI prophylaxis to managing complications and responding to patient psychosocial, education and counseling needs.  (1-4 hours)
  • Oral Diagnosis and Care in HIV Infection.  Dental care specialists address diagnosis and treatment of oral manifestations of HIV infection.  (1-3 hours)
  • Prevention of Perinatal Transmission.  Risks associated with and prevention of vertical transmission of HIV infection. (1-2 hours)
  • HIV and Hepatitis C Co-InfectionOverview of the connection between these two epidemics, including frequency, diagnosis and treatment. (1-2 hours)
  • Cost Effectiveness of HIV Screening and Treatment. Several different programs offer perspectives on cost impact of HIV interventions, including perinatal screening, antiretroviral treatment, implementation of CQI programs, comparative educational methodologies. (1-2 hours)
  • HIV Infection in Women. Several programs on various aspects of HIV in women have been developed, such as epidemiological impact, risk factors, and care and treatment. (1-3 hours)
  • Risk Assessment and Follow-Up. Especially intended for providers in low impact areas or those with low patient volume of HIV patients, program covers behavioral risk assessment and testing and counseling skills.  Also includes review of signs and symptoms that trigger inclusion of HIV in a differential diagnosis. (1-2 hours)
  • Treatment Updates.  Often provided as CME program, this is a brief overview and update on new developments in antiretroviral treatment standards, interventions and monitoring. (1-2 hours)
Conferences
  • Clinical Symposia.  In collaboration with clinical and research faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases and the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, the CAETC provides updates on HIV pathogenesis, antiretroviral therapies, HIV and OI treatment, resistance and additional information as significant. Presented generally to major conferences, such as ICAAC and CROI (twice annually).
  • Annual Forum on the Care of HIV-infected Women.  Through the Colorado Women's HIV Consortium, the  CAETC co-chairs this one-day program that addresses the growing impact of the HIV epidemic among women to promote early detection and comprehensive care for HIV-infected women.  Held in May.
